Introduce yourself and business as if you were speaking from the cockpit:
Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. This is your captain, Syma speaking. Welcome to Pittsburgh Winery, we’ll be traveling around the world seeking out the best grapes we can find. Our final destination will be the iconic Strip District of Pittsburgh where we’ll crush, ferment, age, blend, and bottle. We’re not your average winery so fasten your seat belt and grab a glass! Cheers!

When did you earn your wings?
I earned my wings in 2009 when I graduated with a degree in Public Relations from WVU and immediately flew to Pittsburgh and started wine-ing. The Pittsburgh Winery has been a work in progress and officially took flight in November 2012. Currently we cater to over 20 restaurants in the city and the wine cellar now doubles as a music venue. Good vibes and good wine is what we do and we’re perpetually evolving. The possibilities are endless!

If you could name a nail polish color after yourself or your business, what would it be?
My nail polish color would be a deep blood red, “Syrah-k & Roll”, because nothing captures my essence more than rock shows and vino.

Not all flights are smooth. Tell us about how you handle turbulence in your business.
I’ve learned, instead of wasting energy on turbulent situations, rise above. These are what life lessons are made of. I’m no doctor but I’m pretty sure holding grudges and dwelling on the past causes ulcers, so just move on. A surefire way to survive any turbulence is to surround yourself with positivity. If you put it out there, it will come right back to you.

Who is the wind beneath your wings?
My mom is the most inspiring human I have ever known. She has taught me everything about being a smart, independent, outspoken woman who doesn’t take shit from anyone. She’s also hilarious and a firm believer in laughing until you cry, impromptu dance parties, and the 4 pound Fall issue of Vogue—all of which I too believe are essential.

Advice to other women as they navigate the business world?
Build your reputation on being a genuine and honest person. I don’t think there’s anything more powerful than spitting the truth.

Trust yourself and your instincts. Women were born with great intuition, don’t ignore it.

And please be kind. To everyone. Life is not “The Devil Wears Prada” and no one liked working with Miranda Priestly.

This city, that we always knew was kick-ass, is really booming and we can all reap the benefits. It is essential for us to work together to keep the momentum going. Thank you, Propelle for bringing the women of Pittsburgh together and for promoting this philosophy, the best is yet to come.
