She Said, She Said: Morning Routines.

Morning routines.

A topic that comes up on the regular when talking to women entrepreneurs. It seems that when you get to create your own schedule day in and day out, it can be hard to muster the energy to get up early, shower and dress yourself in something other than sweatpants, or even avoid picking up your phone and jumping into work the minute your eyeballs open.

So ... we thought it would be fun to peel the bed covers back and share how our days start.

// Kate's Morning Routine:

I feel a little silly writing about my morning routine after traveling and being under the weather this month because I didn't do any of these things. When I am not sick or traveling, this is what my mornings look like more often than not:

5:30 AM:  Alarm. (If cat paws and purrs don't wake me first.) Slowly roll out of bed and drink a huge glass of water. (Hopefully I put one beside my bed the night before.) Feed my super hungry, meow-y cat.  Throw on workout clothes, grab a protein bar and phone, and leave with my husband Nik to go to the gym. 

6:00 - 7:00 AM: Work out! 

7:00 - 8:00 AM: Shower, clothes, hair, make-up, and a little gratitude journaling.

8:00 - 9:00 AM: Eat Chef Nik's breakfast preparation. Usually we eat scrambled eggs (often with salsa and avocado), a side of toasted buckwheat groats, yogurt, fruit, and a touch of maple syrup. Often we watch an NPR Tiny Desk concert while we eat. I'm usually on clean up duty, and often finishing a load of laundry. (As Airbnb hosts, we do a ton of laundry!) 

9:00 - 12:00 PM: Head downstairs to the office or work from my living room. I try to start my day with a no-strings attached email or handwritten note, and then get to work. Example morning work activities: make a video for our Rock It! community, planning an event like our Leap Day Jam Session, or writing newsletters. Occasionally I have a coffee date, phone meeting, or need to flip one of our Airbnb units.  

// Emily's Morning Routine:

Before having an early rising toddler at home, I was allergic to getting up before 9:00 AM. These days, I am lucky to sleep past 6:00 AM (and even that feels like a treat). I honestly wish that I had more time for things like journaling and meditation, because I know how powerful those tools are for me. I fit it in where I can (generally during a nap, or after The Babe has gone down for the night), but don't always have the energy for it.

I know that things will continue to shift as my little one gets older, but for now, this is a glimpse into what a typical morning look like for me:

4:55-7:00 AM: Awaken to the sounds of a toddler yelling "MAMA" until I drag myself into her room to get her. Best case scenario, we resume snuggles in bed and hang out for another 15-60 minutes (depending on when the "alarm" goes off).

7:00-8:00 AM: Breakfast. Typical fair includes fried eggs, a bagel or toast, and fruit. If we're feeling particularly frisky (or tired) it's granola and/or yogurt.

8:00-9:00 AM: Shower (me) and Sofia the First (The Babe). Get dressed (both) and put on make-up (me). 

9:00 AM - 12:00 PM: Hanging with The Babe. We go between running errands (Target, Trader Joe's) and playing. On the days when I have a sitter, I am typically hunkered down at a coffee shop or Kate's place doing work.
