May is for Miracles.
Kate and I map out monthly themes each year, helping us focus our time and energy in very specific ways. May is all about miracles, and we've been talking a lot about it in our Rock It! community and in our newsletter.
So it seemed fitting that this little snippet of Marianne Williamson speaking with Oprah found it's way onto my computer screen.
I'd go so far as to call it a miracle.
According to Marianne Williamson, author of books like The Law of Divine Compensation, a miracle is a simply shift in perception from fear to love. Williamson believes that when your heart is open (i.e. you come from a place of love), you become open to the miraculous.
That's great. But what does that have to do with running a business?
The answer: everything.
Fear or love?
Let's take some common business scenarios to illustrate just how powerful this concept is:
When jealousy rears its ugly head over the fact that another business opened up across town offering the same exact services that you do, you are coming from a place of fear.
When you feel anxious or overwhelmed about the sheer volume of tasks on your to-do list, you are coming from a place of fear.
When you are angry at someone else for creating a similar package, running a similar business, or even using similar marketing strategies as you, you are coming from a place of fear.
When you see someone else killing it in business when you're struggling to make ends meet, you are coming from a place of fear.
And when you charge too little for your services or feel like you need to throw in everything but the kitchen sink to justify what you're charging, you are most definitely coming from a place of fear.
What would happen if you shifted your perception of each scenario from fear to love?
When another business opens up offering the similar services, reach out to them and welcome them to the neighborhood, ask them to get coffee, or start a breakfast club. By coming from a place of love, you have the potential to build a new relationship, make a friend, and gain a colleague to bounce ideas off of.
When your to-do list gets a little crazy, turn it into a game. Put on your favorite tunes, go for a walk, or reach out to a friend to get some help. When you can shake the fear and be more playful, you are more likely to turn those to-do's into TA-DA's.
When you are angry or jealous of someone else's success, throw a little forgiveness their way. Hell, throw a little forgiveness your way. Forgiveness is a powerful way to open your heart, to release the stronghold a situation or person has over you, and to open yourself up to love.
And when you have a hard time understanding the value of what you bring to the table, make a list of all the ways your work helps someone else. Still having trouble? Ask a friend or loved one. They can generally see the things we can't.
