Creating an attention-getting away message.

With Christmas almost upon us, it's the perfect time to talk about your away message.

Yes, an away message.

Also known as the vacation responder.

You know, that thing that automatically responds to emails that come in with a message that typically says "I'm currently out of the office from xx-xx. I will respond to all emails when I return."

And while those kinds of away messages are to the point and informative, they don't exactly elicit warm and fuzzy feelings or action of any kind.

Here are some suggestions for letting your email work for you while your busy enjoying some much deserved time off.

» Keep it short and sweet.

No one wants to read a novel as to why you aren't responding to email. Keep it to the point, adding in only what someone really needs to know. Hint: it's not that you are gone for a month long Disney cruise of your dreams, where you will be gorging yourself on the buffet morning, noon and night.

Ex: Thank you for your email. I am taking a much needed vacation! I will be back in front of my computer on January 4th, and will start to dig through my inbox then.

» Infuse your personality / brand into it.

Just because you're stepping away from your email for a while, doesn't mean you should step away from an opportunity to infuse a little personality or humor into your response.

Let's revisit that opening and make it a little more...fun.

Ex: Thank you for your email. While we're busy taking flight ourselves (seriously, we're on vacation), we thought you might enjoy this fabulous TEDTalk from Amy Cuddy on body language. ETA for a response is approximately 2 weeks, barring any bad weather or turbulence.

» Add in a FAQ or two.

Sometimes the things people ask are fairly straightforward and easy to answer. And sometimes those things get answered a lot. Do yourself a favor and include an FAQ section with the top three things that people ask you. Better yet, include three things that you want people to ask you.

Ex:

In the meantime, here are 3 of the most frequently asked questions we get:
